At The Bird House, we start at this fundamental truth: our relationship with our hair is deeply emotional. When we walk by a window and see our reflection, we almost automatically fix our hair. If a visitor comes by unannounced, before we even answer the door we fluff our hair. When we’re getting ready for a party, we style our hair, as best as we can. And when something changes — if our hair dries out, thins, grays, grows heavy, splits at the ends, if the color fades — it affects us on a heart level.

Hair is personal. For many of us, it is a deeply felt part of our identity. At The Bird House, that truth is where our styling begins. Our hope is that you leave our studio feeling emotionally boosted. That you leave with a sense of pleasure over your hair. That your hair looks and feels how you hoped it would. That it represents you.

In that spirit, our stylists offer a start-to-finish service, including a careful consultation before and after your style, an unhurried atmosphere, and a precise attention to quality and detail.

At The Bird House, we respect your relationship with your hair.
And we start there.

We’re hiring!

Brooke Jordan Hunt, Owner, Head Stylist

After spending basically my entire life styling and cutting people’s hair, I became officially trained by the fabulous and brilliant minds at Union Square’s Carsten Aveda Institute, where I learned the fine art of French haircutting and color chemistry. I also quickly grew to understand and appreciate the emotional connection we all have with our hair, and it’s a truth I carry with me during every appointment. After completing my training, I began working at a high-end salon, and in 2011, I opened my own studio. Opening The Bird House has been a wonderful and thrilling adventure, and throughout the years, I’ve grown as a stylist and have built an incredible group of clients. I’m so honored to take care of your hair, ladies and gents. Can’t wait to see you in my chair!

Ashley Michael, Senior Stylist

From New Orleans, I have been doing hair professionally since graduating from the Carsten Aveda Institute in 2012 and I am so thrilled and honored to be working alongside Brooke at The Bird House. At Aveda, I was trained in the much sought-after French technique of haircutting with a further emphasis on modern color applications. My sincere desire is to help my guests in realizing their full beauty potential by complimenting what they have on the inside and reflecting it on the outside. I constantly strive to learn new techniques, and offer elevated hairdressing with a variety of specialties in all hair textures and color applications (including fashion hair colors).

Josefina Rivera-Zhelev, Stylist

Born and raised in New York City, I have always had a deep appreciation for all things beauty and fashion. Upon completion of college, I went on to pursue my true passion at the Aveda Institute of New York. There, I discovered my love for the craft and came to respect hairstyling for the art form that it truly is. My style and approach are informed by a constant flow of inspiration drawn from beauty, fashion, music, and theater. As I continue to grow and evolve as a stylist, my goal is to bring a smile to each and every person who sits in my chair.

Shannon Chalmers, Junior Stylist

Want a free haircut with Shannon? We are currently taking models for a variety of hair cuts, including short/pixie, bob/lob, and men’s cuts.
Please contact us to participate!

After growing up in Vermont, I moved to New York to pursue my dream to be a hairstylist. I’m now a recent graduate of the Aveda Institute New York*, and I am so excited to grow as a stylist and to learn from The Bird House team. And I was honored to give Brooke her current pink look! I love helping clients feel like their best and most beautiful selves, and I look forward to working with you.

*Note from Brooke: Shannon is a junior stylist, and my apprentice, and we’re thrilled she’s taken her first official job at The Bird House. She’s so talented and I know you’re going to love her! Because she’s new as a professional stylist, her prices are reduced 20% from our main service menu and may require more time. When you book with her, please take that into consideration.

Malin + Goetz
Natulique Organic Haircare

We are in the process of providing full-service organic hair color treatments. If you’d like your stylist to use organic color products, please request it in your booking, and please book at least one week in advance.

**We use Olaplex for these services because it an incredibly effective, deeply restorative treatment. It reconnects bonds in your hair, which are naturally broken during color-treatments. This product is necessary in order to maintain the health of your hair during these intensive chemical processes.

Brooke Jordan Hunt & Nicci Jordan Hubert

Owned by Minnesota-expat “Jordan sisters,” Brooke Jordan Hunt and Nicci Jordan Hubert, The Bird House got its start in a tiny closet-sized studio in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn—without even a bathroom!—and quickly outgrew the space. After some effort, Nicci finally convinced Brooke that it was time to invest in a bigger, better studio.

Soon, we moved into our current Gowanus location—with the help of our tireless husbands who supported us and took care of our children while we spent endless hours planning and designing. We’re so honored to be in this bourgeoning community in Brooklyn, and are beyond proud to have a team of beautiful, excellent stylists working with us. The Bird House is truly a labor of (sisterly) love!
